What the marks mean
The marks show how much a grown-up needs in a day. The numbers come from the National Academies,
a group of scientists who study food.
A SOLID mark means they know the number well. A BEST GUESS mark means they had to guess, because there was not enough research. They say so themselves, so we show it.
Two marks means women and men need different amounts. A striped bar means nobody has set a number at all.
These are numbers for a typical adult. They are not your numbers. Your body may need more or less. To find yours, try the USDA calculator, or read about any of these on the NIH pages. Scientists call the solid ones RDAs and the guesses AIs, if you want to look them up.
